Ghunda’s Bermuda Holiday

Written by Nancy Valentine
In 1954, a ship carrying Ghunda, a three year old elephant from India to the United States to join a circus, was forced to stop in Bermuda to replace a damaged propeller. The owner, worried about the delay, arranged to fly Ghunda to New York. The elephant was led to the plane, but refused to board. What transpired was a comic scene as men pushed and shoved Ghunda, while passengers complained and local crowds cheered. This true story is written in rhyme and illustrated by the author. Today Ghunda is alive and well in the Tulsa Zoo.
